Samba Drumming

Samba is the traditional carnival music of Brazil, and samba drums and percussion (the 'bateria') are an integral part of carnival culture. The rhythms are fun and inclusive, and groups of all sizes will be able to play a piece together after just one session.

Each instrument plays a different part, meaning that every player needs to listen carefully and understand how their part fits with everybody else to make an overall sound. Non-verbal communication is central as cues are given using visual and musical signals.

Length, structure and content of these sessions can be tailored to your individual needs. Contact us now to find out more.

Director Lorraine Prince has broad experience of performing samba since 1999, both nationally and internationally including the London School of Samba, Rhythms of the City and Carnival Collective, including high profile performances for example alongside Bombay Bicycle Club at Glastonbury 2010.

She has substantial experience as a workshop tutor including in professional workplace settings, at events and festivals such as the Big Green Gathering, in various schools at all curriculum levels, and with a range of community groups including Hillingdon Mind, Cardboard Citizens, Creative Routes, and Outlook Healthcare.

"Lorraine is an inspirational and energetic Samba teacher. When leading the Samba project for Hillingdon Mind she was highly committed, punctual and considerate of our members’ needs. She knew how to get the best from people and was keen to incorporate their ideas into the sessions, making the music both fun and relevant."
